About Shankar-Jaikishan
Shankar–Jaikishan began life amid the creative cauldron of Prithvi Theatre—Shankar Raghuvanshi, a versatile tabla and multi‑instrumentalist, and Jaikishan Panchal, a harmonium prodigy from Gujarat. It was in those early theatre days that fate conspired to bring them together, forging a musical partnership that was as close as Ram‑Lakshman, as friends affectionately joked. Their big break came in 1949 with Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat, whose melodious songs not only launched their career but also solidified Lata Mangeshkar’s place as Bollywood’s queen of playback singing. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Shankar–Jaikishan set the airwaves aflame. They gave Bollywood an orchestral opulence even in popular tunes, blending Indian classical ragas with Western harmonies and rhythm. Whether sad songs with surprising tempos or lavish musical tableaux, their style was inventive and emotionally rich. They churned out timeless albums—Awaara, Seema, Chori Chori, Anari, Junglee, Professor, Brahmachari, Suraj to name but a few—and earned numerous Filmfare Awards along the way. Their reach extended beyond Bollywood; in 1968 they recorded the landmark album “Raaga‑Jazz Style,” an adventurous fusion of Indian ragas and jazz instrumentation. In that same year, the Government of India honoured them with the Padma Shri, a rare public recognition for film music composers. Jaikishan’s untimely death in 1971 marked the end of their golden partnership, though Shankar continued composing under the duo’s banner with occasional successes like Be‑Imaan and Sanyasi. After Shankar’s passing in 1987, the era of Shankar–Jaikishan became the very definition of musical excellence in classic Hindi cinema—an ocean of melody, as music lovers still say today.
