About The Police

The Police formed in London in 1977, when drummer Stewart Copeland and bassist‑singer Sting—both seasoned musicians—joined forces, soon welcoming guitarist Andy Summers. Their first performances in pubs and clubs belied the depth of their musical training, bringing punk energy together with reggae and jazz sensibilities. Musically, the band stood apart. Their sound morphed from raw punk beginnings into a distinctive blend of reggae‑tinged rhythms, melodic hooks and tight musicianship. As a power trio they created atmospheric, energetic textures, with Copeland’s propulsive drumming, Summers’ shimmering, effect‑laden guitar lines, and Sting’s emotive bass and voice pulling it all together. Their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour (1978), introduced the world to “Roxanne” and “Can’t Stand Losing You”, earning instant global notice. Success grew with Reggatta de Blanc (1979), which featured UK chart‑toppers “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon” and won a Grammy for the instrumental title track. Later albums—Zenyatta Mondatta (1980), Ghost in the Machine (1981) and the final studio album, Synchronicity (1983)—produced massive hits such as “Don’t Stand So Close to Me”, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and the enduring classic “Every Breath You Take”. Synchronicity became a worldwide blockbuster. By 1984 the band dissolved, as Sting pursued a solo career, with Summers and Copeland exploring their own paths. They reunited briefly in 2007–2008 for a high‑grossing world tour, delivering classic performances and demonstrating their lasting appeal. The Police’s legacy is monumental: over 75 million records sold, multiple Grammy and Brit Awards, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and a place on numerous “greatest artists” lists. Their genre‑defying fusion, melodic brilliance and raw energy continue to inspire musicians and captivate listeners worldwide.
