The Ventures
The Ventures are a pioneering American instrumental rock band formed in Tacoma in 1958. Known for surf‑tinged guitar classics like “Walk, Don’t Run” and the “Hawaii Five‑O” theme, they helped popularize electric guitar and remain the best‑selling instrumental band of all time.
About The Ventures
In the late 1950s, two young men in Tacoma, Washington—Don Wilson and Bob Bogle—crossed paths when Bogle was shopping for a car. Their shared love of electric guitar sparked a musical partnership. They began playing under the name the Versatones, performing in small clubs and private parties, until Wilson’s mother suggested the name “The Ventures.” Their break came when they recorded a retooled version of Chet Atkins’s “Walk, Don’t Run” and placed it on their own label—earning a golden disc and launching their career. The Ventures developed a sound defined by clean, jangly guitars, inventive use of stereo effects, and disciplined arrangements. Soon separated into left and right stereo channels, their instrumentals gave guitar a prominent, almost vocal quality. Though never calling themselves a surf‑rock band, their tremolo‑heavy style and driving rhythms helped shape the surf‑guitar genre. They expanded from singles to themed albums—early concept LPs in rock—capitalizing on audiophiles’ fascination with stereo. Their first hit “Walk, Don’t Run” brought immediate success, and they followed with a host of instrumental records and charting albums through the 1960s. Their rendition of the “Hawaii Five‑O” TV theme became another signature tune in 1969. With over 100 million records sold worldwide and dozens of albums and singles charting in both the US and Japan, they are the best‑selling instrumental band ever. Their influence earned them induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Across decades, The Ventures sparked Japan’s 'eleki boom'—a surge of electric guitar interest—and became beloved abroad. Even after the original founders passed away or retired, the band’s successors continued touring and recording. Today, The Ventures remain a vibrant presence, their legacy carried on through new lineups and ever‑lasting guitar melodies.
