About Toto

Toto’s story begins in the late 1970s with a group of highly skilled session musicians—David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro, David Hungate and Bobby Kimball—who had played on countless records for artists like Boz Scaggs and Steely Dan. They formed Toto in Los Angeles in 1977, initially drawing their name from the Latin in toto meaning “all-encompassing,” though a playful nod to Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz often made headlines. Their eponymous debut album arrived in October 1978, led by the hit single “Hold the Line,” and quickly established their reputation for fusing soft pop, hard-rock energy and jazz-tinged sophistication. Through the early 1980s, Toto’s musical palette expanded across arena rock, funk, R&B and jazz fusion. Their fourth album, Toto IV (1982), marked a pinnacle in their career. Featuring the global smash “Africa” which reached number one and “Rosanna” which climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, the album earned six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Beneath the polish, their songwriting, musicianship and studio savoir-faire shone—Jeff Porcaro’s “Rosanna Shuffle” remains one of rock’s most celebrated drum grooves. Tragedy struck in 1992 when Jeff Porcaro passed away unexpectedly, a moment that shook the band to its core. They continued on, with drummer Simon Phillips joining and Toto pressing forward through the next decades, releasing albums like Tambu (1995), Through the Looking Glass (2002) and Falling in Between (2006), while touring extensively. Despite shifts in lineup and changing musical tides, founding members like Paich and Lukather remained guiding forces, keeping the Toto spirit alive through reunions and new projects. Toto’s legacy endures not just in its chart success but in the depth of its craftsmanship. Their songs remain staples on radio, in films, television and in the collective memory of multiple generations. The members’ work as session players helped define the sound of popular music in the 1970s and ’80s. Toto continues to attract new fans and retains a devoted following, thanks to its combination of pop sensibility, instrumental finesse and heartfelt human connection.
