About Van Morrison

Sir George Ivan "Van" Morrison was born on 31 August 1945 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, growing up surrounded by his father’s rich record collection. He started performing as a teen in skiffle and showbands before fronting the blues‑rock group Them in the mid‑1960s, where he co‑wrote the garage‑rock staple “Gloria”. Not long after, his solo career took off with the hit single “Brown Eyed Girl” (1967), before he struck out on a more introspective and ambitious path. In 1968 he recorded Astral Weeks, a genre‑defying album that fused folk, jazz and stream‑of‑consciousness lyricism full of poetic mystery. While initially overlooked commercially, it has since become a cult masterpiece. Two years later came Moondance (1970), a more accessible blend of jazz‑tinged soul and R&B that cemented his reputation. The title track and numbers like “Into the Mystic” remain enduring favorites, and the album featured prominently in all‑time greatest‑albums lists. Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Van Morrison continued to explore a wide musical palette, from the soulful pop of His Band and the Street Choir and Tupelo Honey to the spiritually reflective Saint Dominic’s Preview and the haunting Veedon Fleece. His live double‑album It’s Too Late to Stop Now (1974) is often hailed as one of the finest concert recordings ever made. Recognition arrived in abundance: multiple Grammy Awards, inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1993), the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2003), and other honors including a Brit Award and a knighthood in 2016 for services to music and tourism. Even into his later years, he remains prolific, releasing albums like Accentuate the Positive (2023) and Remembering Now, topping blues charts and creatively revisiting roots while remaining vibrantly alive as a recording and performing artist. Across six decades, Van Morrison’s legacy lies in his singular voice, poetic lyricism, and fluid melding of genres. He remains a touchstone for artists who strive to reconcile soul, folk, jazz and mysticism, and his work continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike.
