About Vangelis

Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, better known as Vangelis, was born on March 29, 1943, in Agria, Greece, and grew up in Athens. Showing musical curiosity from the age of four, he played piano and experimented with sounds long before formal training. Though he briefly took piano lessons, Vangelis largely taught himself and preferred improvisation and instinct over written notation. In the early 1960s he formed the band The Forminx and later became part of the progressive‑psych rock outfit Aphrodite’s Child, whose 1972 album 666 gained cult recognition. In the 1970s Vangelis relocated to Paris, composing music for documentaries and theatre, before settling in London where he opened Nemo Studios. There he produced groundbreaking solo albums—Heaven and Hell, Albedo 0.39, Spiral, China—that melded synthesizers with symphonic scope. He also undertook fruitful collaborations, notably with Jon Anderson (Jon & Vangelis) and Irene Papas, blending electronic innovation with vocal and cultural textures. His mainstream breakthrough came with the score for Chariots of Fire (1981), earning him an Oscar and producing a soaring theme that topped the U.S. charts. He followed with evocative soundtracks for Blade Runner, Missing, Antarctica, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Alexander, many of which became cultural landmarks. Beyond film, Vangelis composed Mythodea—NASA’s Mars Odyssey theme—and later music for the Rosetta mission and NASA’s Juno to Jupiter project, reflecting his lifelong fascination with space and science. Vangelis’s legacy lies in redefining electronic and film music: he played multiple instruments live, crafting richly textured, emotive soundscapes often in one take. Despite international acclaim, he maintained a private life, eschewing publicity and commercialism. Honoured by NASA, France, Greece, and even the naming of asteroid 6354 Vangelis in his memory, he remains a towering figure whose atmospheric and cinematic music continues to inspire artists and listeners worldwide.
