Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963, Whitney Houston grew up surrounded by music—her mother was gospel legend Cissy Houston, and her cousin was the singer Dionne Warwick. From a young age she sang in church and did backup for major artists while still in high school. At 19 she signed with Arista Records under the guidance of Clive Davis and soon emerged as a generational talent affectionately known as “the Voice.” Her self-titled debut album (1985) shattered records, becoming the best-selling debut by a solo artist and producing three number‑one hits including “Saving All My Love for You.” Her follow‑up album, Whitney (1987), debuted at number one in both the US and UK and cemented her place in pop music history with hits such as “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” Houston's career extended into film with critical and commercial success. She continued acting and recording through the 1990s, with notable films like Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife and albums such as My Love Is Your Love. After her untimely death in 2012, Whitney Houston’s legacy as a vocal powerhouse and cultural icon only deepened.
