About 10cc

10cc emerged from Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England, in 1972 — the brainchild of Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme. Longtime collaborators since the late ’60s, the four built a reputation as multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, producers, and engineers. The band’s name was reportedly coined by Jonathan King, inspired either by a dream or, more mischievously, as a reference to potency. From their earliest singles like "Rubber Bullets," their sound combined sharp wit with elaborate studio production, laying the foundation for their signature style. Musically, 10cc blended art rock, pop-rock, and progressive pop, always with a sly sense of humour. Their third album’s standout track “I’m Not in Love” is emblematic: a softly surreal ballad built on a meticulously constructed vocal “wall” — dozens of layered “aaah” tapes creating a dreamy, ethereal chorus. Equally emblematic is “Life Is a Minestrone,” a daft, whimsical reflection on life as a hodgepodge of ingredients, and “The Things We Do for Love,” a polished soft-rock gem that became a lasting favourite post the departures of Godley and Creme. Their mid‑’70s run was remarkable — five consecutive UK top‑ten albums (Sheet Music, The Original Soundtrack, How Dare You!, Deceptive Bends, Bloody Tourists) and numerous hit singles. When Godley and Creme split off in 1976 to pursue visual and experimental projects, Stewart and Gouldman held the fort, scoring hits like “The Things We Do for Love.” The band would briefly reunite in the early ’90s for an album, and since the late ’90s a touring version of 10cc, led by Gouldman, has kept the legacy alive on stages worldwide. 10cc’s legacy lies in their fearless studio innovation, craft songwriting, and the sheer inventiveness of their recordings. They brought a refined, knowingly playful sensibility to pop, influencing the art-pop sensibilities of many who followed. Decades on, their best-loved songs remain staples on classic radio, soundtrack placements, and the imaginations of fans of intelligent pop music.
