About Hemant Kumar
Born in Varanasi on June 16, 1920, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay—known widely as Hemant Kumar—grew up in Calcutta and initially pursued engineering before embracing music full-time. His early forays into radio and the Indian People’s Theatre Association culminated in the 1947 breakthrough recording “Ganyer Badhu”, a haunting tribute to famine’s ravages that endeared him across East India. His musical style married the emotive depth of Rabindra Sangeet with the lyrical warmth of filmi and classical music. Hemant was revered for his perfect baritone and expressive subtlety—earning monikers such as “Voice of God”. He sang across languages and genres, mastering Bengali, Hindi, and regional film music while also setting the standard for Rabindra Sangeet interpretation. As a composer, Hemant scored unforgettable Hindi films like Nagin (1954), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, and produced critically acclaimed Bengali cinema such as Mrinal Sen’s Neel Akasher Neechey under his Hemanta–Bela Productions. He won numerous accolades throughout his career, including multiple National Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and BFJA honors. Throughout the 1970s, even as his Bollywood presence waned, Hemant remained a towering figure in Bengali music—his Rabindra Sangeet renditions, non-film recordings, and later compositions continuing to resonate. He passed away on September 26, 1989, yet his legacy lives on through perennial reissues, memorials like the Kolkata metro station bearing his name, and a place of undiminished affection in the hearts of music lovers.
