About The Alan Parsons Project

Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson first crossed paths in the mid-1970s at Abbey Road Studios, where Parsons had already made his mark engineering landmark records such as The Beatles’ Abbey Road and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. Woolfson, a songwriter and pianist, had conceived an idea for a concept album based on Edgar Allan Poe. The pair joined forces in 1975, giving birth to a studio-based project that drew upon rotating session musicians and vocalists rather than a fixed band lineup. That approach defined their distinctive musical style. Their sound was rooted in progressive rock and art rock, yet made accessible through melodic hooks, lush orchestral arrangements, and pristine studio production. Each album was built around a theme—science fiction in I Robot, the psychological perils of gambling in The Turn of a Friendly Card, and introspection in Eye in the Sky—often threading literary or sociological concepts through complex musical layers. They released eleven studio albums between 1976 and 1990. Their debut, Tales of Mystery and Imagination (1976), set the tone with Poe-inspired storytelling and atmospheric instrumentation. I Robot (1977) echoed anxieties around artificial intelligence, while hits like ‘Games People Play’, ‘Time’, ‘Eye in the Sky’ and ‘Don’t Answer Me’ brought them commercial success. The instrumental “Sirius” became iconic, especially as the Chicago Bulls’ entrance theme in the 1990s. Though the Alan Parsons Project rarely performed live during its original run, their meticulous studio craftsmanship and thematic ambition left a lasting mark. Their legacy endures through reissues, reappraisals, and frequent sampling in modern media. The duo’s approach showed that rock music could be cerebral, cinematic, and emotionally resonant—an enduring influence on art-pop and audiophile listeners alike.
